Treasurer’s Report
May 7, 2007
As I write this report, we are just finishing up the planning for CUG 2007. From all indications, this meeting will be as successful as the last few CUG meetings. I once again commend the Local Arrangements Committee for their fine job, and willingness to stay within the budget.
CUG 2007 is the first year in which the CUG board of directors has taken control of all activities associated with vendors other than Cray, Inc. being a sponsor of the meeting. This year was successful in getting sponsors to reduce registration costs, while keeping the amenities at the level one comes to expect of a CUG meeting.
As of May 1, 2007, CUG had total assets of $260,455. This is up about $13,000 from last year at this time. This number is artificially high, as we still must pay the bills from the 2007 meeting, but it is a high point since I took over as treasurer in May of 2001.
The trends on CUG assets have been increasing since August of 2003, when we instituted a number of changes in budgets, contracts and planning. The latest information continues to show that these changes are still working.
In FY2006, CUG had a positive cash flow, earning just over $12,000. This is the 3rd straight year of a positive cash flow, and I am projecting a similar positive cash flow for FY2007.
During the past year, we have made some changes in the accounting software, moving to “QuickBooks” to allow easier interaction with the accountants doing the taxes. This change also allowed us to do some additional budget planning and track invoices and accounts receivable.
All taxes and corporate fees have been paid, and work was done to develop a turnover document for key CUG board of director positions.
Overall, the Cray User Group is in a very good financial position, with a simplified accounting system, and good fiscal controls.
This is my last Treasurer’s report. It is with a mixture of sadness and relief that I pass these duties along. It is a relief that after 6 years, I can attend a CUG meeting without having to be intimately involved in the planning, payments and such. It is with sadness that I realize that I will not have the opportunities to associate with so many of the fine folks I have met through CUG over the past years.
I have enjoyed working with so many within Cray and CUG member organizations. I look forward to working with you in other future opportunities.
Thanks for your support of the Cray User Group.
